How to play RaceRoom with your phone as the wheel
RaceRoom is free on Steam, which makes it a nice first sim to try a phone wheel in. The layout ships built in, so setup is a scan and a couple of clicks.
Here is what using it looks like
- Install QR Controller from Steam and open it.
- Set Controller Type to the RaceRoom layout.
- Scan the QR code with your phone camera. The controller loads in the browser, and RaceRoom sees it as a normal gamepad.
- For motion steering, open the controller in the free companion app, or switch the connection to Via Internet and rescan.
- Tap Enable Motion Control, hold the phone like a wheel, and head out of the pits.
What's on the phone
Throttle and brake share one vertical slider. Push up to accelerate, pull down to brake, and the phone vibrates as your finger moves over the brake, so you can feel how hard you're braking without looking down.
Buttons: Shift Up, Shift Down, DRS, Camera, and Pit Request. There's also a d-pad and a stick for getting around the menus, so you don't have to reach for the keyboard between races.
If you race with Push to Pass and the pit limiter instead, there's a Steering Wheel variant of the layout that swaps those in.
Curious how the tilt steering actually works? The motion controls post goes into it, video included.
Want to try it? QR Controller is on Steam and the RaceRoom layout ships built in. RaceRoom itself is free, so this is a cheap way to find out if sim racing is for you.
